Come and try out the giant catapult !
The 3 giant catapults are in action every days from April to Septembre ! Come and thy them out !
Three full-scale replicas of huge siege warfare machines, based on 13th century designs, will give visitors of all ages some idea of medieval military tactics.
At that time, the Château des Baux was supposed to be impregnable, but it was scarcely able to withstand the attacks from these formidable machines.
The catapult, or ballista could fire large rocks, Greek fire, or carrion over distances of 150 metres. Weighing in at four tonnes, the catapult was hauled into the theatre of warfare by oxen.
The trebuchet, the largest medieval siege warfare machine, could hurl 100 kg rock projectiles at walls 200 yards away.
Battering rams were used to break down the heavy gates of besieged fortresses. Swung back and forth, the long steel-tipped head was protected against bombardment from above by a stout roof structure.
