Falconry at Baux

Château des Baux de Provence is the place to be for falconry on horseback. Join us on 13/14/15 and 16 May for four spectacular shows each day.

The Château des Baux de Provence offers its visitors, at no additional cost, magnificent equestrian falconry shows. On 13, 14, 15 and 16 May, history enthusiasts will bring to life again these ancestral techniques combining equestrian dressage, falconry and the art of the hunt.

The performances will take place each day at 12.00, 15.00 and 17.00 and will last around one hour.

During the first part of the show, the re-enacters present the birds of prey to the visitors, who can find out in this way about buzzards, falcons, an eagle owl and a bald eagle. This eagle has a very wide wingspan, a white head, with a huge beak and talons, and is also very well-known as the symbol of the United States of America.

Then the trainer presents his mount to the audience; it is a magnificent black Friesian. This horse’s gracefulness is all the more remarkable given his imposing size (1m70 to the withers and 700kg); the execution of dressage figures that he performs in total harmony with his rider will enchant the audience.

Finally the last part of the show highlights the close partnership that operates between the trainers and the animals: the Friesian is free (without saddle or bit), he works in perfect accord with the birds of prey, letting them land on him under the kindly eye of the trainer.
