EXHIBITION
Marc Chagall: in confidence
From 27 April to 28 January 2017

In addition to the multimedia exhibition "Chagall, Midsummer Night’s Dreams" at the Carrières de Lumières, the Château des Baux-de-Provence is presenting the exhibition "Marc Chagall : In Confidence".From 27 April to 8 January 2017, you can see some 70 photographs depicting both the man and the artist, taken from the Marc and Ida Chagall Archives in Paris.

The carefully designed scenography with its reproductions of little-known photographs at the Château provides with an overview of Marc Chagall’s life through several key stages: from his family origins in Vitebsk, White Russia (today known as Belarus) to decisive moments for the artist surrounded by his friends and loved ones, as well as his encounters with various well-known 20th-century figures such as Stravinsky, Picasso, Max Ernst, etc.

To make the Russian painter, Marc Chagall, reside on walls built during the Middle Ages in Baux-de-Provence, which were never his but become his, as they become ours, corresponds to the artistic vision that we are hoping to express.
Adorning the walls with personal photographs, similar to painting, regardless of the medium, should appear as natural as transforming these beautiful, silent walls through the gaze of Chagall and his loved ones : they talk to us, they touch us, they tell us about life choices, difficulties, moments of happiness, doubts, abandonment, renewal, friendships and the need to express oneself through the language of painting, all bearing testimony to an era that seems so distant, but is yet very present and relevant.
It is as if the walls had rediscovered another life, enriched with this dialogue, welcoming us and inviting us to be moved today.
